Paint Shop Pro

Written on October 9, 2003 – 2:47 pm

I’ve decided I want to try my hand with Paint Shop Pro, once again. I’ve downloaded it several times to try to learn how to use it, and have never figured it out. I even bought a book hoping to learn PSP. But it didn’t work. This will be my fourth or fifth attempt at learning it. I’ve been looking through the quick reference guide and the manual in hopes that when I install it and start playing, I won’t be totally lost.

So I have a question for all you graphic designers…which do you prefer to use, Paint Shop Pro or Photoshop? I’m really curious. Also, if you prefer one over the other, why – price, learning curve, features, etc?

I like the soft focus effect that is available with PSP 8. And the use of those tubes that are so popular. But Photoshop brushes are all the rave as well. So which is better or is that just a user preference issue? Which is better for someone who doesn’t really know much about graphic design? Which has the smoothest learning curve for a beginner? I ask all this because I’ve never used PSP before, but I’m familiar with Photoshop.

    Rayne,

I am ecstatic over your templates! They are gorgeous! But to the point: Photoshop hands down. It is NOT that steep of a learning curve AND as we discussed, it has the tools for web artists like yourself. I beleive that you would regret not saving up a little longer for PS as opposed to the immediacy of PSP in the long run. There are more plug-ins…both Adobe and third party…for Photoshop than I can even begin to tell you. So there…my opinion has been renderred. Your templates show that you have an exceptional eye and hope to utilize one for my bands’ site when I can get things to slow a little.

Thanks Again, Good Luck…and please keep working! :)

I prefer Photoshop…but then again, I never spent that much time trying to use PSP. As for the tubes, you’re likely to run into copyright issues if you dowload many from the web. People who offer them, aren’t always up-to-date on copyright laws…or very conscientious.

I don’t think it’s all that hard to learn Photoshop. There are hundreds upon hundreds of tutorials to try on the web…

I’m an all out PSP kind of person. However if I was to do any kind of print work I’d get PS. 95% of the plugins which works in PS also works in PSP

Hi Rayne :) Im perfer PSP, maybe because that is what I learned on and can’t afford PS..lol As far a the tubes, you relly need to watch out for copyright with them..people tube pretty much anything..which is always ok. You can use Brushes with PS aswell.

That last template I made, you commented on, I used brushes and stickly psp. I also used many plug ins for the different effects. Most of my plug-ins are for PS, but will work with PSP. There are many many tutorial for both PSP and PS.

hope this help make your decsision easier :)
