Odd Girl Out

Friday, December 13th, 2002

I’ve just started reading Odd Girl Out by Rachel Simmons. Excellent topic, she writes about “the Hidden Culture of Aggression in Girls.” It talks about how the unlike boys, girls bully in silent, “alternative” way. Instead of using violence, they attack in a non-physical way…name-calling, hate clubs, ignoring, snickering, back-stabbing, etc…

I learned of this book while reading an article on the author in Biography magazine (January 2003 issue). It explained how she suffered when she was in grade school and when she reached college decided to research her feelings about the issue. Finding hardly anything on the subject of girls’ aggression, she began doing her own research, contact a publisher and began writing a book, to date the only book that deals directly with this subject. It is highly recommened if you have a young daughter. It gives insight into this heartbreaking but not well-known subject that can very easily target girls and affect their entire lives.

Not Feeling Well

Thursday, December 12th, 2002

I think I may developing some cold or flu. I woke up this morning and could barely hear out of one ear. Now my eyes are burning slightly, my nose is runny, it hurts my nose to breathe and my throat hurts slightly when I swallow. All definite symptoms of something brewing…I hope I can stop it before it gets worse. I’ve already taken some meds, but will be popping some more pretty soon. I don’t particularly want to be sick with my parents coming to visit this weekend. :(

CSS headache

Wednesday, December 11th, 2002

Thank goodness I don’t have to deal with the headaches of CSS and browser compatibilty. It really gives me a headache when I start reading all the issues of browser compatibilty and style sheets. This nightmare is what makes me glad I’m not a web developer with a site that is viewed in multiple browsers. From watching my stats, most of my readers are using Internet Explorer 6. In any case, since my site is personal, I’m just saying to heck with them all. I tried to please all browsers at one point and I got to hate my site, so I said to forget it…if you can’t see my site or it looks like gobbldy-gook, upgrade your browser. ;)

Yummy

There is just something so appealing at the thought of a nice hot cup of apple cider on a cold day. Since it’s gotten cooler, I’ve totally become addicted to the stuff. Sure I have to have my cup of coffee in the morning and I love hot chocolate, but hot chocolate settles heavily on my stomach. It fills me up…it may have something to do with the fact that I use milk instead of water in my hot chocolate…it tastes better that way. :) But when I want something hot and not too heavy a cup of hot apple cider is just what I need. My mouth waters just thinking about it and when I take that first sip, my mouth tingles in delight at the flavor…I’m off to make myself a cup now…all this talk has made me want one even more.

Parking Mayhem

Tuesday, December 10th, 2002

Brooke’s mention of drivers stalking the shoppers walking to their cars reminded me of our shopping excursion this past weekend. My husband and I ventured out to buy a futon for one of our bedrooms. We decided to see what K-mart had to offer. (Yes they are still open in my city) It took forever to get out…the parking lot was full. So full that a man was willing to wait for our parking spot. Here we are trying to strap down the futon box that was partially hanging out the back of our SUV and all this time, cars kept having to go around the man waiting. He must have waited 15-20 minutes while we tried to tied the thing down. He finally gave up, but I was just amazed that he waited as long as he did…since it was obvious that we wouldn’t be pulling out in a few seconds. Some people are just weird.

Christmas gift

Saturday, December 7th, 2002

This year we are going overboard on gifts. It started for my birthday back in June when my husband bought me a new SUV! Yep, 2002 Pathfinder. He also got me a new, bigger tv. For Christmas this year, we decided to get a new refridgerator since our old one was falling apart. It works, but shelves are falling down and the door shelves are held up with duct tape! :D So we now have a brand new fridge. No more filling ice trays or watching when you open the door for falling objects.

He’s now presented me with a new gift which is new for him as well. We just purchased a new laptop. So I will take his old one, which works wonderfully and he gets the new (it’s more graphic intense capable…he can play games on it). I am so excited. With our recent wireless network installation, we can take the laptops anywhere inside the house or out in the yard and still be on the internet. Since most of my computer time is internet related, this is a fabulous thing. I cannot wait till it arrives. I will be reinstalling all of my stuff onto the old laptop so he can take over the new one. They are both great laptops, the new one will support his graphic intense games better so he can get back to playing Tribes and Warcraft.

I think next year, we’ll have to watch how we spend our money and not get too extravegent on gift buying. This year topped it all, we even bought a house back in March for our 1 year anniversary. :P
